It was the fifth test for the European drivers under the category of Under 28. Pepe and Borja were second classified, and hoping to consolidate this good position being the youngest driver better classified.
The a priori ground was auspicious. On the asphalt of the Roman sections, the Spanish pilot could give the level that we are accustomed to see in him, and it could be. At the start of the race – after playing the special urban Rome, a procedure for the drivers – and on Saturday, Pepe took the command being the best in its category, setting the scratch in the second and third stage and placing leader, but a mechanical problem made him abandon in the fourth special of the rally. The pace of Pepe and Borja was very high and they were getting the desired results, but this misfortune left them out of any fight for victory.
Although the intention of the team was to be able to re-engage in “super rally” on Sunday, a breakdown in the steering box again put the Madrid driver out of the race, which could only roll a few kilometers, leaving the test definitely.
Pepe left a statement at the end of the rally: “It was an oil leak Saturday when we were leading a good pace, being able to fight for the top spot in ERC Junior U28. But with all the smoke it was impossible to drive and we decided to stop. When we got back on the track it was too late. And on Sunday morning we had the problem with the steering box and there was nothing we could do to continue. Sorry for the team because they worked so hard on Saturday night to fix the car. Now we have to leave Rome behind and look at Latvia, where we are looking for a good result on earth to say goodbye to a difficult season. ”
The last race will be Rally Liepaja in Latvia on 6-8 October, over ground.
